BODY AND FITNESS

Every client has a unique exercise plan based on exercise history, needs, goals, and physical ability. The core of all exercise plans is the functional training methodology. Which means few if any single joint exercises (i.e. leg extensions, biceps curls) and the majority of the workout will be spent on your feet focusing on several core movement patterns (pushing, pulling, rotating, lifting, and squatting). To keep workouts interesting, and to add variety workouts will include weight lifting, circuits, intervals, martial arts, kettle bells, yoga, pilates, and ropes.

Functional Training

Functional training is a different way of looking at exercise. It’s not a new way; it’s a rather old way finally getting the attention it deserves. In a normal gym most people train like a bodybuilder, one body part at a time. If the only thing you are concerned about is how you look and you have 2 hours a day to spend in the gym that may be the way for you. In your daily life you don’t use your biceps in isolation, or your quadriceps, so why would you train like you do? Most of the things we do use multiple muscles and joints working together. It makes more sense to train the way you live and play. Some exercises are similar to the bodybuilder approach and if you have exercised before you will recognize things like a deadlift or a bent over row. Some exercises will be completely new to you.

Progressive Overload

Progressive overload – gradual increase of stress placed on the body during exercise necessary to cause the body to get stronger or more flexible, etc.

Volume – Increase in total time, or number of repetitions for a given exercise.

Intensity – Increase in percent of maximal functional capacity, i.e. decreasing rest periods between exercise sets, increasing exercise heart rate during cardiovascular exercise, lifting more weight, or lifting same weight faster.

  Periodization

Periodization – The process of varying a training program at regular time intervals to bring about optimal gains in performance.
